Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar's next after Sardar Udham Singh, Gulabo Sitabo, has landed a release date.

The quirky comedy, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan, is due to be released on 24 April 2020, the makers revealed today.

While Khurrana and Bachchan have both worked separately with Sircar in the past, this is the first time the two actors are working together.

The film, produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar, also reunites writer Juhi Chaturvedi with Sircar after Vicky Donor (2012), Piku (2015) and October (2018).

Since the film is set in Lucknow (Chaturvedi's hometown), the title could be referring to the puppet theatre from Uttar Pradesh which is on the decline. Gulabo and Sitabo are the names of the two women in a man's life. Gulabo is the mistress while Sitabo is the beleaguered wife.

When announcing the project, Sircar had said in a statement, "Gulabo Sitabo is a fun colloquial metaphor used by the locals... as to its connect to the story, wait and watch the film to know more."

Amitabh Bachchan has already began working on the prep and script readings of the upcoming film. He shared photographs of those initial sessions with director Sircar, writer Chaturvedi and producer Lahiri on his personal blog.

From the photographs, it appears that the team had gathered at Bachchan's Juhu office.
