UK-based rapper Hard Kaur has been charged with sedition in a first information report (FIR) lodged in Varanasi for her comments on Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The 39 year-old musician made the remarks on her Instagram Story page on Thursday.
According to NDTV.com, the complaint was filed by a local lawyer, Shashank Shekhar, on Wednesday. It will now be forwarded to the cyber cell of the Uttar Pradesh police for further investigation.
Hard Kaur had used the image of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and accused the organization of being racist and casteist. She levelled similar accusations against Adityanath aka Ajay Singh Bisht.
Born Taranjit Kaur in Kanpur, Hard Kaur moved to the United Kingdom as a child and grew up there. It was in the UK that she recorded the song 'Ek Glassy' which topped the UK charts in 2007.
She has also recorded songs for Sriram Raghavan's Johnny Gaddaar (2007), Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) and more recently in OK Jaanu (2017).
