AR Rahman's 99 songs postponed, new release date to be announced

The film was initially scheduled for release on 21 June.

AR Rahman's debut as a producer and screenwriter will have to wait a few more weeks. The release of the composer's debut production, 99 Songs (2019), has been postponed from its original date of 21 June.

The Oscar-winning composer put out an official statement on his social media handle early on Thursday.

The film is directed by ad filmmaker Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy and produced by Rahman's YM Studios banner. The film's story revolves around a struggling singer's transformation into a music composer and the expressions of art and self-discovery involved in it.

99 Songs was initially scheduled for a global release on 21 June. However, as the statement concludes, the film is still in post-production. While the studio has refused to comment on a new release date, it has stated that the announcement will come soon.

The film has Ehan Bhatt and Edilsy Vargas in the lead roles. Both artistes have been trained musically at the KM Music Conservatory overseen by AR Rahman for over a year.

The composer has also written the story for the film, with screenplay by Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy. Rahman has also composed about 15 songs that will feature in the film.
