After the Tamil remake of the Sridevi-starrer English Vinglish (2012), Ajith steps into Amitabh Bachchan's shoes once again, this time for Nerkonda Paarvai.
The short, fiery, hyped-up trailer for the remake of Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's Pink (2016) offers a very different take on the story.
Directed by H Vinoth, Nerkonda Paarvai features Shraddha Srinath, Abhirami Venkatachalam and Andrea Tariang (who featured in the original film as well) as key figures in the drama.
The trailer begins with sequences of a massive concert, followed by the three young women, and immediately shifts to the court. The story, though it is known, is kept in the background in the trailer. The focus remains on the grim take and the threats aimed at the young women. From the sleazy deals in court to the violent threats by the suspects, the intention is quite clear. The visuals seek to establish the ominousness of the case.
They succeed. While Shraddha Srinath has some big shoes to fill playing Taapsee Pannu's character, she shows the determination required. The actress looks suitable to play the part of the determined, independent young woman out to get justice at all costs.
The starry affair, though, is that of Ajith. While the Hindi original had a weak, sickly Amitabh Bachchan struggling against his age to fight for justice, the Tamil trailer cannot afford to upset the action star's fans. Ajith does sport white beard and hair but is hardly sickly. He even gets a star entry sequence where he bashes up one of the goons with a pipe, with a complete windstorm brewing to add to the dramatic effect.
The other drawback of the trailer is that it lacks a dialogue to match the 'No means no' effect, which the Hindi trailer had. While there is one line, 'Why do you destroy someone else to prove your loyalty', it lacks the effect. Regardless, the trailer does show the promise, suspense, and intrigue to get your attention.
The film also has Vidya Balan and Kalki Koechlin in special appearances, which are not revealed in the trailer.
Nerkonda Paarvai has been produced by Zee Studios and Boney Kapoor.
