The Thirupanandal police on Tuesday booked director Pa Ranjith for 'inciting caste violence' with his comments against the tenth century Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola. Reports suggest the director had remarked that the Cholas acquired land from tribals and oppressed communities by force.
The Hindu newspaper reported that Ranjith made the comments while attending a convention organised by the Blue Panthers' Party in Thirupanandal earlier this month.
A complaint was subsequently filed by Bala, former Thanjavur district secretary of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, leading to the police taking action.
Pa Ranjith has directed some prominent films like Madras (2014), Kabali (2016) and Kaala (2018).
