Anubhav Sinha's Article 15 (2019) has already grabbed attention with its fiery trailer. Now, the first song from the film spits fire in more ways than one at the issue at the heart of the plot.
With Slow Cheeta, Dee MC, Kaam Bhaari, and Spit Fire teaming up, the song, 'Shuru Karein Kya', sets in motion the crusade led by Ayushmann Khurrana's dedicated cop in the film.
The film's tackling of the issue of caste-based violence against women has already caught the attention of audiences. It only finds more power and inspiration through the rapid, fiery verses of these rappers.
The composition is set up with the contrastingly mild melody of Gandhiji's favourite bhajan 'Vaishnav Jana To' wafting before the quartet takes the baton. The bhajan continues in the background throughout the number.
The lyrics of the song are direct in their intensity and unapologetic of the Indian public's tendency to shy away from conflict. The rap verses tackle a range of topics from the primary issue of caste indoctrination from childhood and the lack of courage in society to rise against such events to the responsibility of individual citizens.
Slow Cheeta is quite good, with Kaam Bhaari and Dee MC adding some brilliant, controlled rapping. The verses flow with the attitude required and definitely make an impact on the listener. It helps that the beats, composed by Devin 'DLP' Parker and Ginnger, are syncopated to add to the magic.
Article 15, directed by Sinha, is set to be released in theatres on 28 June. Watch the 'Shuru Karein Kya' song below.
