Box office: Malaal has disastrous first weekend; Kabir Singh, Article 15 continue shining

Spider-Man: Far From Home had a very good first weekend, making Rs44.75 crore nett at the India box office.

Producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Malaal (2019) collected just Rs50 lakh and Rs75 lakh nett on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com. This doesn’t come as a surprise after the film opened to a mere Rs45 lakh nett on Friday.

Directed by Mangesh Hadawale, the film launched actor Meezaan Jaaferi and actress Sharmin Segal. The film’s overall total stands at just Rs1.70 crore in three days.

On the other hand, the Hollywood film Spider-Man: Far From Home emerged a winner at the Indian box office. The film clashed with the previously released Hindi films, Kabir Singh (2019) and Article 15 (2019), and still went on to earn an impressive Rs44.75 crore nett.

This is the second highest weekend number for a Hollywood film in India this year. The first spot is held by Avengers: Endgame, which made a mammoth Rs157.25 crore in the first three days in the country. Both films are produced by Marvel Studios, which is now owned by Disney.

But the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home had no effect on director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Kabir Singh. The Shahid Kapoor-starrer was going great guns even in its third weekend, making Rs21.75 crore nett. The film’s grand total currently stands at an incredible Rs233.06 crore.

Article 15, directed by Anubhav Sinha and starring Ayushmann Khurrana, also had a good second weekend, making Rs11.75 crore nett. The film, made on an estimated budget of Rs28 crore, has so far made a total of Rs45.49 crore nett.
