Bigil song 'Singappenney': AR Rahman returns with another roaring anthem for a Vijay film

Trust AR Rahman to deliver an anthem that pumps you up. The man who gave 'Rang De Basanti' (2006), 'Jai Ho' (Slumdog Millionaire, 2009), 'Sadda Haq' (Rockstar, 2011) and more recently, 'Aalaporan Thamizhan' for Mersal (2017), has delivered another one for the upcoming Vijay film, Bigil. Titled 'Singappenney', the anthem is a rousing call for women to step up to the challenges posed by the world and society at large. 

Rahman begins well with the percussions dominating the composition, which lends it the perfect baseline. The mix of drums, percussion beats and the composer's signature piano sets the tune for Rahman's vocals to follow. The composer delivers a good song that is both moving, hip, and catchy in its rhythm and structure. 

Rahman dominates the song with his high pitched intonation, with Sashaa Tirupati joining in later. The latter gets only a few verses of melody that mark a subtle shift, but it is Rahman that controls the tempo of the whole composition. 

Vivek's lyrics, set in fairly chaste Tamil, add to the magic. The lyrics call women to rise against everyone that laughed at them, questioned their abilities, and stopped them. Using the traditional symbols of lioness (singappenney), a common theme in Tamil literature and poetry, the song does have an appeal. 

While there has only been a lyrical video released, it captures the role of Vijay's football coach in Atlee's film. The sports-based thriller is likely to feature Vijay in the role of the coach of a female football team. The film is set to be released in the Diwali weekend of 2019.
