Rahul Roy, the actor most known for his debut film Aashiqui (1990), is now set to make a comeback in Hindi cinema as a lead actor with director Kanu Behl’s film Agra. The film is being produced under the banner of Yoodlee Films.
This is Behl’s next feature film after the critically acclaimed Titli (2014). Agra also stars Priyanka Bose (of Lion, Half Ticket and Ascharya Fuckit fame), Mohit Agarwal, Ruhani Sharma, Vibha Chibber, Sonal Jha and Aanchal Goswami.
Speaking about the film, Behl said in an official statement, "Agra is a story of a cosmos of a family – throbbing and pulsating, hunting and escaping the very dynamic energies that people in the family inhabit. Its an exploration of space in an increasingly crowded world, and the quest for a sexual odyssey of an individual here. Having a production house like Yoodlee Films to come onboard and back this project gives me confidence in their commitment to create meaningful cinema – cinema which is at once relevant and unique in content."
Roy had become a household name in the 1990s when his debut film Aashiqui (1990), directed by Mahesh Bhatt, became a musical hit. Along with him, the film’s lead actress Anu Agarwal had also acquired instant fame.
The actor followed this up with a number of films like Pyaar Ka Saaya (1991), Junoon (1992), Sapne Saajan Ke (1992), Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee (1993), among others. However, these films didn't do quite well and his career could not take off.
Roughly a decade ago, Roy had acquired some fame in Bhojpuri cinema. His film Elaan (2011), which he also co-produced, had become a box office hit.
The last time Roy played a lead in a Hindi film was in To B Or Not To B (2016) but the film went unnoticed. He was later seen in a supporting role in the Hindi film 2016: The End (2017).
