The decision of Zaira Wasim to dissociate from the film industry arrived as a shock to many on Sunday, 30 June. Amid rumours, criticism and support, the actress has confirmed she will step away from the industry post her next release, The Sky Is Pink. Now, the actress has requested the makers of the film, RSVP Movies, to excuse her from promotions for the Shonali Bose-directorial.
A Mid-Day report quoted a source as saying, "With the film eyeing an October 11 release, the makers were planning to kick off the promotions by August-end. It was evident from Zaira's Facebook post on Sunday that she has decided to severe her ties from films. in keeping with her decision, she has requested the makers to excuse her from the promotional activities."
The actress had shared a statement on her Facebook page where she said, "This journey has been exhausting, to battle my soul for so long. Life is too short yet too long to be at war with oneself. Therefore, today I arrive at this well-grounded decision and I officially declare my disassociation with this field."
The actress made her film debut two and a half years ago with Dangal (2016), and later acted in Secret Superstar (2017). Both films were well received. However, her decision ensures that she will not join Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar in the promotions for The Sky Is Pink.
The film, directed by Shonali Bose, will see Zaira in her last role as the inspirational speaker Aisha Choudhary, who was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis at a very early age. The producers of the film, RSVP Movies, said in their statement, "While she was a thorough professional throughout the shoot, she is now firm in her resolve to not be associated with movies in any capacity. The team, including director Shonali Bose, have been informed of her decision."
The Sky Is Pink is set to be released in theatres on 11 October. Zaira's decision has met mixed reactions in the industry, with Anupam Kher suggesting the young actress might have been 'forced to quit'.
