The Marathi song ‘Ashwini Ye Na’ from Sachin Pilgaonkar’s Gammat Jammat (1987) is fresh in the Marathi audience’s minds even after 32 years. As much as the audio, Ashok Saraf and Charusheela Sable’s crazy antics are also something that continues to leave people in splits.

Now the song is revamped in director Hemant Dhome’s Ye Re Ye Re Paisa 2. Looks like Hindi cinema’s trend of remaking old classic songs has finally caught the fancy of Marathi cinema.

In the original, the song is picturized inside a house with Saraf dancing in one room, and Sable in another. The remake is shot in a posh and glittering club and features the ensemble cast – Sanjay Narvekar, Aniket Vishwasrao, Prasad Oak, Mrunmayee Godbole, Pushkar Shrotri, Prathamesh Jadhav, Anand Ingle and Smita Gondkar.

Although it is remade as a typical club song with contemporary foot-tapping music, the soul of the old song is retained. However, despite the complete change in the scenario, one is reminded of the original number. The makers have paid tribute to the original by making their characters dance with a broom. But they didn't realize that it is impossible to match up to the energies of Saraf and Sable. This could lead to purists not being impressed by the remake.

Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal had sung the original song. Here, Troy Arif has recreated the song, while Avadhoop Gupte and Mugdha Karhade have done the singing. Gupte has sung with the right amount of energy. Karhade hardly has a line to croon.

Ye Re Ye Re Paisa 2 will be released on 9 August.
