If a child fails to learn to speak, is it a blot on parenthood? Sanjay Dutt's debut as a producer, Baba, has a touching, and sweet trailer. Directed by Raj R Gupta, the film features Deepak Dobriyal, Nandita Patkar, Spruha Joshi, Aryan Menghji, Chittaranjan Giri and Abhijeet Khandkekar. The film is set to be released on 2 August.
The trailer opens with the sight of a poor, but happy family of a deaf and mute couple and their kid (Aryan Menghji) sitting around a radio trying to listen to music. The inability of the father and mother seems to have affected the child. The child and his father, the titular Baba, (Deepak Dobriyal) share a close bond. The family's happiness is threatened when another couple (Spruha Joshi and Abhijeet Khandkekar) claim the child to be their own. Is the child born to Baba and his wife?
As Baba (Dobriyal) fights a legal system that is bent on proving him as the reason for the child's mutism, there emerges the true dramatic kernel of the story.
With its well crafted trailer, the film holds a lot of promise. The presence of an impressive cast, from Dobriyal and Chittaranjan Giri to Nandita Patkar and Spruha Joshi. The music of Rohan-Rohan brings on a mellow flavour to the overall experience. The playfulness of the trailer makes its way through situational comedy like the instance of Giri, the only hearing character close to the family, discovering that the radio the family has been listening to does not work.
The trailer has its character arc well cut, with Dobriyal and Aryan Menghji making the most of it. The film is Dobriyal's first Marathi venture, and the actor makes the most of his lack of dialogues to bring about physical expressions in the trailer. It will be interesting to see how the story pans out.
The film is set to be released on 2 August.
