In Bihar, marriages take place in three different ways - one is arranged, one is due to love, and the other is forced, also called 'jabariya jodi'.
For Prashant Singh's directorial debut, actor Sidharth Malhotra is the enforcer of forced marriages, Abhay Singh. To avoid paying dowries, the families of the brides get goons like Singh to kidnap the grooms for a hurried and forced marriage.
Enter Parineeti Chopra's character who has got her eye on the dashing Abhay. While he may dream of a political seat, she dreams of marriage with him. Thus, she hatches the ultimate plan, to capture the capturer! The two lead characters have the goals set and go up against each other in a war for love and bragging rights.
Joining them are Jaaved Jaaferi and Sanjay Mishra as Malhotra and Chopra's fathers respectively. Aparshakti Khurana, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Gopal Dutt and Neeraj Sood are also part of the ensemble cast.
While it is good to see Malhotra and Chopra together again (the two have a natural chemistry), it is not clear which way the story has set itself up. The trailer shows many instances of comedy, the subject matter itself deals with a lot of drama and emotion.
Produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Shaailesh R Singh, Jabariya Jodi is due to be released on 2 August.
