The first two songs of Super 30 (2019) have trained their focus on the lead, Anand Kumar, played by Hrithik Roshan. This time, for its latest song, the students step up to the plate, as they perform an 'English play' in front of an audience.
Before the song begins, Anand's students lament that they are already at a disadvantage since they don't know English. He takes up the decision that they will perform a play in English.
The next day, being the festival of Holi, the students put up a show, singing a version of the famous scene from Ramesh Sippy's Sholay (1975), where Dharmendra's Veeru tells Basanti, "In kutto ke samne mat nahna [Don't dance in front of these dogs]".
The Ajay-Atul composition takes a while to grow on you and once it does, the song is already over. Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics have a mishmash of English, Hindi and Bihari in it. 'Basanti No Dance' attempts to break the fear of English amongst Anand's students.
The song, featured on the youngsters, has been sung by Prem Areni, Janardan Dhatrak, Divya Kumar and Chaitally Parmar. They have equal portions in the song, and no one takes over the short number.
It remains to be seen how this quirky number fits into the larger picture during the film. Super 30, directed by Vikas Bahl, is due to be released on 12 July.
