Filmmaker Mani Ratnam recently registered his career’s biggest hit in the form of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018), the multi-generation gangster drama featuring Prakash Raj, Arvind Swami, Arun Vijay, Simbu and Vijay Sethupathi in lead roles.
While reports have been making the rounds about Ratnam’s next project, reliable sources have informed us that he has planned to revive his idea to adapt Ponniyin Selvan into a film.
Over a decade ago, Ratnam had originally planned to make Ponniyin Selvan with Vijay Sethupathi, Vikram and Mahesh Babu, and later with Ram Charan and Karthi. His plans never materialised as every time he planned to get the project off the ground, it would get shelved for unknown reasons.
With Lyca Productions interested in bankrolling Ponniyin Selvan, Ratnam is hopeful of making the highly anticipated project with Sethupathi, Vikram, Jayam Ravi and Simbu.
Apparently, Hindi film actor Amitabh Bachchan has been approached with the offer to essay the role of Sundara Chola in the film, which will have music by AR Rahman.
Ratnam is currently waiting for the final nod from Sethupathi, who has to adjust his dates and set out a big chunk of his available time for the project.
However, it seems impossible for the project to go on the floors this year as the rest of the rumoured cast is currently busy with their commitments. Vikram, who has just wrapped up shooting for Kadaram Kondan, will soon commence work on Mahavir Karna. Jayam Ravi is busy shooting for Komaali. He also has Thani Oruvan 2 in the pipeline with his brother Mohan Raja. Sethupathi too has multiple commitments.
