Live-in relationships may be common in the metros but are not easy in smaller towns. Kriti Sanon and Kartik Aaryan’s characters discover this in their first film together, Luka Chuppi.
Director Laxman Utekar makes his foray into Hindi films with Luka Chuppi. The trailer of the romantic comedy was released today.
While Guddu (Aaryan) is keen on a quick marriage, the girl (Sanon) proposes a no-sex live-in relationship. However, their desire for this arrangement turns into a nightmare as the young man's family too moves in with the couple.
'Experience live-in sahaparivar [with family]' is an appropriate tagline for Luka Chuppi. Based on its trailer, the film comes across as a satirical take on live-in relationships in small towns.
The pair looks good on screen together. Sanon has played a small-town girl before in Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017).
The film has been shot in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. Aaryan's character Guddu comes across as vulnerable and desperate, while Sanon is quite confident. Her idea of a live-in seems to stem more from curiosity. The 'Yeh Khabar' track from the Akshay Kumar-starrer Aflatoon (1997) fits this situation perfectly.
Aparshakti Khurana played the dim-witted but good-hearted friend in Stree (2018) and producer Dinesh Vijan has cast him in a similar role in Luka Chuppi.
Vinay Pathak looks promising as the powerful father figure who does not mind couples eloping but will not tolerate a live-in relationship. Pankaj Tripathi’s character gets a blink-and-you-miss mention in the trailer, which mainly focuses on the protagonists.
On the face of it, Luka Chuppi comes across as a light-hearted romantic drama. Given all the hype around the film, the trailer is, perhaps, a little underwhelming. Guddu’s family, particularly the mother, runs the risk of being melodramatic.
Luka Chuppi is slated for release on 1 March, where it will compete with the Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer Sonchiriya.
