Lions, tigers and Hindi film stars don't generally mix together, but in Indra Kumar's Total Dhamaal, the animals and the stars are both on a wild and crazy adventure together. The film takes them through rickety bridges, vast deserts and a zoo where the animals don’t play nice.
The third film in the Dhamaal series, Total Dhamaal brings back the artistes from the first two films, Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh and Jaaved Jaaferi. This time around though, producer-director Indra Kumar also introduces Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit Nene into the mix.
The cast goes on a treasure hunt, based on the words of a dying man from a plane crash, which promises Rs50 crore at the end. They break up in groups of twos and threes, all attempting to grab the cash first. However, what would life be without a few obstacles, like a broken bridge, some quicksand and a gangster (Mahesh Manjrekar) eager to put a bullet into each of them?
The CGI-heavy comedy is a complete throwback to the 1990s, when both multi-starrers and the madcap comedy genre ruled at the box office. It’s a delight to see both Kapoor and Dixit, a 1990s pair, back in action and bickering on screen like an old married couple.
Another staple from the decade, comedian Johnny Lever, is back with his one-liners. The rest of the cast also have their moments as they scramble for the loot.
For audiences who are ready for some nostalgia, and possibly some recreated songs — the Karz (1980) number ‘Paisa Yeh Paisa’ has been used — the zany comedy seems to be just the thing.
Total Dhamaal, with story, screenplay and dialogues by Ved Prakash, Paritosh Painter and Bunty Rathore, is due to be released on 22 February.
