Box office: Vicky Kaushal's Uri mints Rs70 crore nett in the first week

The Accidental Prime Minister failed in the first week, while Simmba earned Rs20.25 crore in its third week at the box office.

Actor Vicky Kauhshal's commercial viability has got a huge boost with Uri: The Surgical Strike proving to be the first hit of 2019. The film enjoyed a terrific first week collecting Rs70 crore nett in India business.

Uri enjoyed an opening weekend with Rs35 crore and made the same amount of collection over the week. Made at an estimated budget of Rs25 crore, Uri was released across 2,200 screens in India. As per sources, the film has made Rs14 crore through combined satellite and digital rights and Rs2 crore through music rights (all sold to Zee).

Directed by Aditya Dhar and produced by RSVP, Uri is based on the 2016 surgical strike by the Indian army in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation against the terror attack in Uri district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The other release on 11 January, The Accidental Prime Minister turned out to be a dud, making Rs17.50 crore nett in its first week. Made at a budget of Rs30 crore, The Accidental Prime Minister was released across 1,200 screens in India. The film has Anupam Kher playing former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, while Akshaye Khanna plays his former media advisor Sanjaya Baru. The film is based on a book by the same name written by Baru.

Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh-starrer Simmba's business expectedly slowed down, but still managed a decent Rs20.25 crore nett in its third week. The Rohit Shetty film has so far bagged Rs232.16 crore nett. Simmba was made at an estimated budget of Rs120-125 crore and was released across 4,500 screens in India.
