Two hapless men, one named Goopi Gawaiyaa and the other named Bagha Bajaiyaa, meet when they are both banished from their kingdoms.
The tone-deaf Goopi has no concept of his bad singing while the equally bad Bagha is unaware of his terrible skills as a musician. But when they get together and perform, they are miraculously visited by ghosts who enjoy their music and offer them four boons.
Both Goopi and Bagha use their status as artistes to help the warring twins, who are kings of different kingdoms, to reconcile and bring everyone back together.
This animated telling of the tale conceived by Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury, grandfather of the great filmmaker Satyajit Ray, comes alive with a fresh take on the tale by director Shilpa Ranade, an acclaimed animator, illustrator and educator.
The characters and the world of Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa have been designed by Ranade and animated by Paperboat Animation Studios.
The screenplay has been written by Soumitra Ranade. The film also contains what seems like enjoyable, funny songs with lyrics by Rohit Gehlowt and music by 3 Brothers & A Violin.
The entire feel of the film brings to mind a vibrant book brought to life. The characters and the world all have a distinct look to them, which is instantly appealing.
The trailer calls the 79 minute feature film India’s ‘first children’s film for adults’. The makers have used the medium of animation to tell the story of these iconic characters first introduced in 1915, and later brought to the big screen by Satyajit Ray himself in 1969.
The award-winning film, Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa, produced by the Children's Film Society India, in association with Karadi Tales, is due to be released in theatres on 1 March.
