Gully Boy song: Ranveer Singh nails it in ‘Apna Time Aayega’

The hip hop track, composed by Dub Sharma and DIVINE, is brimming with promise and raw ambition.

The chorus of Gully Boy's first song proclaims, "Apna time aayega, tu nanga hi toh aaya hai, kya ghanta lekar jaayega [Our time will come, you've come naked in this world, what the hell will you take when you die]". The foot-stomping, chest-thumping track is all the introduction we need into the character played by Ranveer Singh in the film.

At first, he is wide-eyed and curious to join the world of aspiring rappers and hip hop artistes who populate the slum he lives in. But with encouragement from well-wishers along the way, he comes into his own, finding clarity within the chaos of his world.

He keeps reminding himself, that eventually his time will come, as there's no one else like him out there. Singh's character puts in the time and the effort behind his songs, writing whenever he can. When the opportunity comes, he doesn't shirk from it, taking the stage with confidence and leading along an approving crowd to his tunes.

This catchy anthem of sorts for Zoya Akhtar's film has been composed by Dub Sharma and Divine, one of the two artistes who've inspired the feature. Divine has also co-written the lyrics with Ankur Tewari and even provides some of the backing vocals. Singh has done an impressive job on the rap as he brings alive the fierceness of his character.

The track sets up the gritty tone of the upcoming film, written by Akhtar and Reema Kagti, perfectly. It is brimming, nay, bursting with promise and raw ambition both for Singh and his character.

Gully Boy, which will have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival next month, is due to be released in India on 14 February, Valentine’s Day.
