At the pre-release press meet of Vada Chennai (2018) in October last year, actor-producer Dhanush had confirmed that he would be joining hands for the fourth time with filmmaker Vetrimaaran.
While Dhanush did not divulge more information about the project, titled Asuran, Vetrimaaran in a recent interview revealed that the film will be based on the Tamil novel Vekkai, a revenge drama that traces the fight of an oppressed community against its oppressors.
The novel has been written by Poomani. Shooting for the film began last month.
The project also marks the Tamil debut of Malayalam star Manju Warrier. She is being paired with Dhanush for the first time and the exciting combination has already created quite the buzz on social media.
While the makers are yet to reveal the rest of the cast and crew, it has been learnt from a reliable source that popular Tamil director Balaji Sakthivel, known for helming critically acclaimed films like Kaadhal (2004) and Vazhakku Enn 18/9 (2013), has been roped in to play the antagonist.
Neither the makers nor Sakthivel himself has officially verified this report doing the rounds.
Composer GV Prakash Kumar has been signed on for the film's music. This will be his fourth collaboration with Dhanush and third with Vetrimaaran.
Last seen playing a local ruffian in Maari 2, Dhanush will sport a different look for Asuran. It is after wrapping up this project that Vetrimaaran will return to finish the pending work on the second part of the multi-generational gangster drama franchise Vada Chennai, which featured him as a carrom player who gets sucked into the world of politics and rowdyism.
