Milan Talkies song 'Bakaiti': Sukhwinder Singh ups the tempo in this return-to-1990s composition

With remixes ruling the roost, it is nice to hear a composition that moves away from the beaten path. 'Bakaiti' from Tigmanshu Dhulia's upcoming Milan Talkies captures the feel of the 1990s with its high-tempo, stylized song.

With Sukhwinder Singh leading the way on the vocals, the song delivers the right introduction to Ali Fazal's character, a 'Bollywood'-inspired director.

The visuals capture Ali Fazal's exploits at filmmaking as he experiments with all the familiar tropes of mainstream Hindi cinema. From helping a young woman escape her wedding to beating up goons while dressed as Amitabh Bachchan in Deewaar (1975), the filmmaker from Lucknow uses all the iconic moments as he goes on to make his dream film. 

The song plays on this theme of a stubborn young man following his dream at all costs. The theme of 'Bakaiti' is a mockery of the insult that people often throw in the way of dreamers, calling their ambition 'tall tales'.

Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics have spunk and drive up the angst and rebellious feelings of the character well. 

But it is the composition of Rana Mazumder that is worth a listen. Vibrant, with hypnotic beats, the song is catchy, to say the least. It also has a 1990s feel to the music, with its synthesizer mixes.

Sukhwinder Singh's high-energy vocals take the song to the next level. While it is not on the same level as Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Dhan Te Nan' composition, the song does have shades of the tempo and energy that drove that song from the film Kaminey (2009). 

In all, this might just be worth a listen for its nostalgic feel and the energy.
