Anupam Kher signs on for Vivek Agnihotri's next, called The Kashmir Files

Vivek Agnihotri's The Kashmir Files will see Anupam Kher step into the cast list. The actor was announced as part of the project by Agnihotri during his recent US tour. 

The director said, "When I started researching, meeting, and listening to Kashmiri Hindu community, I realized that their story of loss and suffering is so painful that if this story has to be told, it must be told by the greatest of actors of our times to bring the realism, conviction, and sensibility that heals the community. My first choice was Anupam Kher. It’s a coincidence that he happens to be a Kashmiri himself, and I am so proud and happy that when he heard the script in his New York home, he agreed to act in this very important film of our times. I hope that the audience will see a dimension of Mr Kher that we haven’t seen so far.”

Kher has often spoken of his own family's displacement after the divisive events in Kashmir. The actor traces his roots to Kashmir, and has been outspoken in his support for the recent abolition of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. 

The film follows the story of the migration and oppression of Kashmiri Pandits in the late 1980s-1990s in the region. The director, and wife Pallavi Joshi, are currently on a recce tour of the United States interviewing victims and survivors. This will mark the first time the event is recorded in a cinematic format. 

Agnihotri had last directed The Tashkent Files (2018) based on the conspiracy theory about the assasination of the late prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
