Director Vishal Furia’s Lapachhapi (2017) opened the door for new-age horror films in Marathi cinema. This was followed by few other films supernatural films like Saavat (2019). Now, a novel experiment in the horror genre, at least for Marathi cinema, will be tried in the upcoming movie Kaaal (2020), which is written and directed by first-time filmmaker D Sandeep.
The film stars a list of newcomers which include Satish Gejage, Sanket Vishwasrao, Shreyas Behere, Rajkumar Jarange, Vaibhavi Chavan and Gayatri Chighlikar.
The teaser of the film doesn’t reveal the story even a bit. The audience is given a glimpse of its setting, an empty house. The film is about a group of youngsters aiming to make a fake horror video for someone. But unknown to them, a real ghost begins to create havoc in a frightful atmosphere, and puts their lives in danger.
The positive point about teaser is that they haven’t tried adding regular jump scare moments, for which mainstream Hindi cinema [read Vikram Bhatt’s movies] is mostly guilty. The sound designing also manages to stand out. The idea of putting CCTV cameras to record a fake horror video and how things go awry appears interesting, at least till now. We will likely know more in the trailer.
Kaaal is due to be released on 24 January 2020. Watch the teaser below and let us know if you would be keen to watch the film.
