"Look what Santa gave me this year," wrote the actor, sharing her new Christmas gift.

The film will be based on S Hussain Zaidi's bestselling novel, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, from which Gangubai is a character. The film is scheduled to release on 11 September 2020.

Bhansali was initially set to begin filming for Alia Bhatt and Salman Khan-starrer, Inshallah, which fell through during script discussions.

Gangubai Kathiawadi was announced in place of Inshallah in October 2019. The film will also mark Bhansali's first directorial venture since Padmaavat (2018). The film is being produced by Bhansali Productions and Pen Movies International.
