Siddhant Chaturvedi, who broke out with Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy (2019) this year, recently signed a biggie in the form of Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) Bunty Aur Babli 2 (2020), the second film in the franchise. The movie is also the launch for actress Sharvari Wagh. The two young leads are playing new-age conmen or thieves.
In Bunty Aur Babli (2005) Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji conned several people. The second film will also see the return of their characters, but Bachchan will be replaced by Saif Ali Khan.
Chaturvedi said that he got crazy laughing when he heard the storyline of Bunty Aur Babli 2. “It’s a film with entertainment, mass appeal and songs and dance, but it also has content. These are not like old Bunty and Babli. They are new and they are the voice of today’s young generation,” he said.
The first film was an out-and-out entertainer. But Chaturvedi surprised us by revealing that Bunty Aur Babli 2 will also deal with social issues.
“We know a lot of things are happening outside these days, so it is about a lot of issues,” he said. “Like, there is a reason why they are doing this [conning people]. It is layered. Obviously, they [YRF] are also conscious and they know that the time is gone when you can just make it for the sake of laughter. So, this connected me. This is exactly what I was searching.”
Chaturvedi also revealed about the characters he and Wagh play. "They are more like rebel with causes. Whatever they are doing is for a specific reason. They aren’t thieves. They do con people. But what exactly they are into you will get to know soon," he said.
Bunty Aur Babli was directed by Shaad Ali. The second film will be helmed by first-time filmmaker Varun Sharma.
