Dabangg 3 song 'Munna Badnaam Hua': Salman Khan's 'item boy' turn can't hold a candle to the original

While any Salman Khan film runs on the fuel of its soundtrack, Dabangg 3 has been quite mediocre on that front so far. The latest song from the film, 'Munna Badnaam Hua', was always going to find it an uphill battle to match the original 'Munni Badnaam Hui' from Dabangg (2010).
With no Malaika Arora in sight, Salman Khan puts on his dancing shoes to turn 'item boy' for this Sajid-Wajid number.
The setting and tempo of the song remain the same as the original, with Khan playing the amorous Chulbul Pandey enjoying a night out with his buddy cops. Except that the one to take the stage is Chulbul himself.
The song begins with the same zest and mischief that the original was known for, but lacks the irreverence that typified the earlier versions.
With Kamaal Khan and Badshah providing the intervening rap for Salman Khan, it is Mamta Sharma who takes on the female voice. While the singing is on a par with the original, there is little to speak in terms of composition or lyrics. Sajid-Wajid's composition is tame and lacks the energy and instant attraction of the past numbers. While the composition has its moments, it lacks the spark to turn it into a hit.
The lyrics by Danish Sabri also feel a little jarring, and occasionally slip out of rhythm. With the so-called item songs growing repetitive, this one feels like a tired experiment.
The other big issue is the choreography. While the inane dance moves of Chulbul Pandey made the first one a hit, this one lacks the style and the charisma. Khan feels a little uncomfortable in the moves, particularly when pitted against director Prabhu Deva.
While the original grew more popular after the film's release, Dabangg 3 would do well to outlast the song this time around.
The film is directed by Prabhu Deva, and is set for release on 20 December 2019. Watch the song 'Munna Badnaam Hua' below and let us know if you are keen to watch this film.
