The trailer of Leena Gangopadhyay and Saibal Banerjee’s Sanjhbati highlights the warmth and the baggage unconventional relationships bring with them. A story dedicated to old parents, who lead their life in negligence away from their children, Sanjhbati also explores the bonds that are formed outside of blood relationships.
The trailer also offers a sense of the characters and the way they function in a situation of glaring problem these days. While Soumitra Chatterjee and Lily Chakraborty as the aged parents, deprived of attention and care from their children, are a perfect fit, Dev Adhikari seems to have broken his usual image of a macho man with the character of Chadu. He goes beyond forming an adorable relationship with Chhana Dadu (Chatterjee), Phuli (Paoli Dam) as well as Chakraborty’s character.
Dam’s speech modulation and facial expressions at certain moments in the trailer show that the actress has got into the skin of Phuli.
There are moments of laughter between the elderly people and Chadu, and Phuli, with the latter unearthing and infusing excitement in their lives. The moments of crisis, as well as those of the family creating unnecessary complications instead of showing compassion, pervades through the trailer.
It also becomes apparent that the elderly duo arranges for the marriage between Chadu and Phuli. However, many hurdles come in the way of uniting the two. In a glimpse, Saayoni Ghosh’s character accuses Chadu of forgetting her for Phuli. On the other hand, it is hard to guess Sohini Sengupta’s role in the story.
Sanjhbati is slated for release on 20 December 2019.
