Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) deals with the crime of rape. There have been countless films based on providing justice to a rape victim. But director Ajay Bahl’s Section 375, which sees Akshaye Khanna and Richa Chadha play opposing lawyers, dwells deeper into the crime rather than merely focussing on providing justice.
The most hard-hitting moment in the teaser of the film comes when Khanna’s character asks, “Can any man having being accused of rape ever walk free?” The question forces you to think hard on how the society looks down upon a man who is accused of raping a woman and later proven innocent.
Although we are not given a glimpse of the accused and the victim, the teaser of Section 375 makes the focus of the film quite clear. Khanna plays a defence lawyer who argues that his client, a film director (Rahul Bhat), is innocent. Chadha plays a tough public prosecutor who wants justice for the accuser, her client (Meera Chopra).
The teaser sees both parties putting forth their cases strongly. It is not possible to say whose case is stronger, which means that the balance has been maintained. Khanna and Chadha are powerful actors and one hopes them to live up to their images in the upcoming film.
Section 375 will be released on 13 September.
