The film, directed by Karan Lalit Butani, is based on true events and the story involves the Indian Army. Sharma, in his second film after Loveyatri (2018), is said to play an Army officer in the film.
In a statement to the newspaper Times of India, the director said, "We are excited to announce Aayush Sharma and Isabelle Kaif as the leads of Kwatha. Kwatha is a village on the border of India and Myanmar. While it is based on true events, the plot is unconvential, which made actors like Aayush and Isabelle perfect for a film like this."
Bhutani, who previously assisted Tigmanshu Dhulia on Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster (2011), has written and directed Bull Bulbul Bandook (2013) and Phamous (2018).
Kwatha is produced by Sunil Jain, Omprakash Bhat, Aditya Joshi, Alok Thakur and Sujay Shankarwar. The film, which should begin filming this September, is due to be released sometime next year.
