After a long break from the film industry, Aamir Khan's brother Faisal Khan is set to make his debut as director.
Faisal Khan was reportedly planning to return as an actor in the film, Factory, but he has now taken over the reins of the project. In addition to direction, Khan will be making his debut as a singer in the film.
In an interview with Mid-Day.com, the actor said, "Direction was always on my mind, but this happened organically. We had another director [Sharique Minhaj] on board, but due to date issues, he couldn't continue. That's when I decided to step in. What is interesting is that my brother and mother [Zeenat] are aware of the film, but they don't know I have turned director. I wanted to surprise them after finishing one schedule. I am waiting to see their reaction."
In a statement, Khan said, "My mother always kept telling me that I'll do well as a director and I am sure she will be pleasantly surprised with my decision." The statement also said Khan is 'excited and enthusiastic as he has been an integral part of the film right from the scripting stage'.
Faisal Khan had worked as an assistant to filmmaker cousin Mansoor Khan on Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992). He made his acting debut with Madhosh (1994) and continued to act for about a decade but without much success.
Faisal shares a frosty relationship with older brother Aamir, whom he had once accused of keeping him in confinement and forcing him to undergo treatment for schizophrenia.
In 2008, he moved court to seek freedom from Aamir Khan's custody. The verdict went in his favour, with the judge declaring that Faisal Khan was free to make his decisions and did not need to be in anyone's custody.
