The Parineeti Chopra- and Sidharth Malhotra-starrer Jabariya Jodi opened to a low number yesterday. Directed by Prashant Singh, the romantic comedy set in Bihar made only Rs2.75 crore nett on its opening day, according to BoxOfficeIndia.com.
As per trade sources, Jabariya Jodi's budget was around Rs25 crore, which isn’t huge. Yet it may be an uphill task for the movie as it faces two major hurdles.
First, given a poor opening, a film relies heavily on positive reviews and word-of-mouth. Jabariya Jodi has neither. Plus, two biggies in the form of Akshay Kumar’s Mission Mangal and John Abraham’s Batla House are slated for release on Thursday 15 August.
That gives Jabariya Jodi a six-day run in its first week to try and maximize its collection. After the Independence Day releases, the film is expected to make negligible collections at best. The film was earlier slated for release on 2 August. That would have given it a bigger window at the box office.
Meanwhile, Super 30's collection dipped below the Rs1 crore mark for the first time yesterday, its fifth Friday at the box office, as it made Rs60 lakh. But the Hrithik Roshan-starrer is already a hit, having collected Rs140.89 crore nett at the domestic box office so far.
The Hollywood film The Lion King made Rs1 crore on its fourth Friday taking its overall total in India to Rs142.78 crore nett.
