Music has been an integral part of a Dharma Productions film. There are always high expectations from a Dharma film. The few songs of Kalank that have been released so far haven’t quite lived up to the expectations. Some hopes were pinned on actress Madhuri Dixit, but the 'Tabaah Ho Gaye' track has turned out to be average.
The song has been composed by Pritam and penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The duo has given great film albums in the recent past like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) and Dangal (2016).
The big let-down for 'Tabaah Ho Gaye' are the average lyrics by Bhattacharya. The song has a simple theme, 'I have been devastated since being separated from you'. The opening line holds promise, but the rest of the lyrics just play out in a dull manner. The song is short and the lyrics come across as a half-baked effort.
The tabla and dholak beats form the pulse of the track. Overall Pritam, gives a respectable score, but the average lyrics don’t do justice to the music. Shreya Ghoshal's singing is fine, and she would have hoped for better lyrics too.
Veteran choreographer Saroj Khan collaborates with Dixit after many years for 'Tabaah Ho Gaye'. Khan had last choreographed for Dixit in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas (2002). While producer Karan Johar has matched Bhansali’s opulence, the vintage Dixit-Khan magic is missing in the Kalank track. 'Tabaah Ho Gaye' is a choreographed by Khan and Remo D’Souza. Save for a few classical steps, there is nothing much to write about the choreography.
In comparison to 'Maar Daala' and 'Dola Re' songs from Devdas, the Kalank track is below expectations. Dixit gets it right with the expressions, but a better, energetic choreography would have helped the lift the track.
Kalank is scheduled for release on 17 April.
