Actors Vijay Sethupathi and Shruti Haasan have teamed up for the first time for upcoming Tamil film Laabam, which had its launch ceremony in Rajapalayam earlier today, according to a statement released by the makers.

Laabam will be directed by National Award-winning director SP Jananathan, known for making entertaining films that also seek to highlight political and social justice issues like E (2006), Peraanmai (2009), and Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai (2015).

The film will be produced by Vijay Sethupathi in association with Arumuga Kumar.

Haasan, who was last seen in Suriya’s Si3 (2017) in Tamil cinema, has signed a Tamil project after two years. She recently signed a Hindi film with Mahesh Manjrekar.

Laabam also stars Kalaiarasan and Jagapathi Babu in crucial roles. D Imman has been roped in to compose music, while Ramji will work the camera.

Meanwhile, Sethupathi has multiple projects in his kitty this year. He has recently wrapped up shooting for Sindhubaadh (2019) with Pannaiyarum Padminiyum (2014) and Sethupathi (2016) director SU Arun Kumar. The film, which has been predominantly shot in Tenkasi and Thailand, also stars Anjali as the leading lady.

Sethupathi also has Mamanithan with Seenu Ramaswamy in his kitty. He is currently shooting for his next project with director Vijay Chandar, who had previously directed Sketch (2018) and Vaalu (2015). Raashi Khanna plays Sethupathi’s pair in this project.

The industry grapevine is that Vijay Sethupathi, last seen playing a transwoman in Super Deluxe (2019), has signed Mani Ratnam’s film adaptation of epic novel, Ponniyin Selvan. Jayam Ravi and Vikram are also said to be part of the project.
