Actress Payel Chakraborty found dead in Siliguri hotel


According to the post-mortem reports, no wound or narcotic elements have been found in her body.

Bengali film and television actress Payel Chakraborty was found dead in a hotel near Airview More Siliguri on Wednesday (5 Septmeber). According to her family, she committed suicide due to her prolonged depression. Her father Prabir Guha has stated that they are not suspecting anyone's involvement in the death. However, Chakraborty’s phone has not been retrieved yet and that has triggered suspicions in the investigation.

Chakraborty checked in the hotel on Tuesday (4 September) night and asked the staff members there to wake her at 7am next morning as she was supposed to go to Gangtok the following day. However, as the staff did not receive any response from the hotel room the next morning, they informed the police, who eventually discovered body hanging from the hotel room. Chakraborty’s father came to Siliguri to take the body back from Siliguri Hospital on Thursday (6 September).

Chakraborty had been shooting in Shimurali on Monday (3 September). Her mobile phone was found switched off since Tuesday and her parents filed a missing report at the Panchasayar Police Station in Kolkata. According to the hotel staff, Chakraborty was heard speaking loudly on the phone the previous night. However, her phone has not been found yet.

Chakraborty married businessman Sumit Chakraborty in 2006 and they have a 9-year-old son. In 2015, her husband filed for divorce and the trial has been on for the last three years.

Her son lives with her husband while she lived alone in an apartment near Garia. “Her son’s birthday was on 3 August. As she went to meet him in her school, the latter did not agree to meet her and hence, she was deeply hurt,” Gua said to Anandabazar Patrika, a daily.

Payel was a popular Television actress who appeared in serials like Chokher Tara Tui, Rupayan, Saat Bhai Champa. She made her film debut with Cockpit (2017) and also played the protagonist in Sandip Bhattacharjee’s upcoming film Kelo.
