On the eve of Janmashtami, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali announced his next romantic saga based on the legendary romance of Radha-Krishna. In a press release, Ali said, "I have always been fascinated by the eternal love story of Radha and Krishna. In all of Indian folklore I know of no other story, which is so intensely personal and yet has such an epic scale. It has been my dream to step into the world of Radha Krishna."

Ali, whose Window Seat Films produced the upcoming romantic legend, Laila Majnu (2018) with Ekta Kapoor, is now joined by Reliance Entertainment on the new project.

Shibashish Sarkar, of Reliance Entertainment, said, "The story of Radha-Krishna is one of the most fascinating love stories of all time and Imtiaz is India’s most accomplished film maker in this space. In its reach and appeal, it transcends boundaries of culture and language. Imtiaz's idea to bring this eternal love story to the big screen is extremely fascinating and we are delighted to partner with him on this journey. We are exploring various collaborations on the project to make it of a scale befitting its epic nature."

The story of Radha-Krishna is one of the most popular and well-known legends across the Indian countryside. With Ali's record of romantic tragedies in Rockstar (2011), Tamasha (2015) and the recent Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017), it might prove an interesting choice. The research on the film is currently underway.

Laila-Majnu, directed by Imtiaz's brother Sajid Ali, is set to be released on 7 September 2018.
