Kangana Ranaut’s long delayed Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi has been courting controversy for a while. The latest has been about the actress becoming de facto director of the film.
Ranaut’s team had later clarified that she had only shot certain sequences. Now the buzz is that the actress was offered 'co-director' credit for the film, but Ranaut refused. Filmmaker Krish is the director of Manikarnika.
The Mumbai tabloid Mid-Day quoted a source as saying, ”Kangana re-shot major portions over a 45-day schedule. She did it out of sheer love for the subject. When the studio asked if she would take credit for it, she turned down the offer saying it was her responsibility to ensure the film turns out well."
A source close to the actress too claimed that the actress did indeed turn down the co-director credit.
Manikarnika is co-produced by Zee Studios, Kamal Jain and Nishant Pitti. Efforts to contact the producers did not succeed.
Ranaut’s alleged interference in her films first came to light when Apurva Asrani, writer and editor of Hansal Mehta's Simran (2017), accused the actress of ruining his script.
Recently, an image of a clapboard with Ranaut's name as director emerged from the sets of Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi. The actress’s team then issued a clarification that she had only shot some portions of the film.
Ranaut’s next does not begin anytime soon, but rumours have already been swirling of Panga director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwary adding a no-interference clause to her contract with the producer. Tiwary has denied this rumour.
Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi is set to be released on 25 January 2019.
