Similarities with Pirates Of The Caribbean only limited to genre, affirms Aamir Khan

The Thugs Of Hindostan (2018) star claims that save for the genre there is nothing similar between his film and Hollywood action adventures.

From the time the first teaser and posters of Thugs Of Hindostan came out, fans and social media have compared the film to the popular Hollywood franchise Pirates Of The Caribbean. And now that the trailer is out, the resemblance with Pirates Of The Caribbean is stronger than ever.

Thugs Of Hindostan is a film that will have action on the seas as Azaad/Khudabaksh (Amitabh Bachchan) battles the British on the high seas. The film stars Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Katrina Kaif.

“This film is an action adventure," said Aamir Khan at the trailer launch in Mumbai. "In that sense the genre is similar. Pirates Of The Caribbean is in the same genre. There is no similarity in the stories though.”

Earlier, director Vijay Krishna Acharya stated that the film has not been adapted from any book or film but is an original.

"This is not based on any book," Acharya said. "Because the [film’s] title has Thugs in it, that is why it is being perceived to be based on a book [Confessions of a Thug by Richard Bentley]. "What is good or khaami [shortcomings] of my story has been created by this brain (pointing to his own head)."

Speaking about the idea behind the film, Acharya said, “Whenever we have made a period film, we have made a reverential film. I thought we should make it a little irreverent, where the character [perhaps referring to Aamir Khan’s character] is not so noble or virtuous, then we perceive him to be normal, I thought that would be interesting. It’s hard to get people to theatres, so if we offer them a spectacle it becomes a little easy.”

Unlike the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, where the protagonist (Jack Sparrow) and his crew are on a hunt for personal reasons, in Thugs Of Hindostan, Firangi Malla (Aamir Khan) has been hired by the British to defeat Azaad (Bachchan).

Thugs Of Hindostan is set to be released on 8 November,
