Anupam Kher has been receiving praise on social media for his look as former prime minister Manmohan Singh in the upcoming The Accidental Prime Minister (2018). But that certainly wasn’t the case for the message he sent Manmohan Singh on his 86th birthday yesterday.

Kher posted a video of himself dressed as Manmohan Singh and wrote, “Respected Dr Manmohan Singh! Here is wishing you a very happy and healthy birthday. Maybe I will get an opportunity to have a cup of tea and a piece of cake with you if you ever watch our film. I promise, you will like my portrayal. It is full of sincerity and honesty. Regards.”

Kher began getting trolled by tweeple for trying to profit by playing Manmohan Singh. It was also pointed out to him that the director of the film has been charged with GST (goods and services tax) fraud.

The Accidental Prime Minister stars Suzanne Barnett and Arjun Mathur as former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and current Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

The film is based on the book of the same title by political commentator Sanjaya Baru, who was Manmohan Singh's media adviser in his first term as prime minister. Baru's character in the film is played by Akshaye Khanna.
