The Marvel cinematic universe is extremely popular across the globe, and especially so in India. Some recent Marvel films have enjoyed great commercial success at the Indian box office. Over the years, we have, well, marvelled at superheroes like Iron Man, Deadpool and Hulk.
Indian fans, however, have always wondered if one day we could have an Indian superhero in a Marvel film.
Well, that dream may yet come true, and the Marvel cinematic universe is not averse to it.
Stephen Wacker, vice-president of creative development at Marvel, who was in India recently, told a daily newspaper that the company is open to the idea of an indan superhero, provided it finds the right content.
“I think in the next few years Marvel is going to try to create characters with a real toehold in Indian culture," Wacker said. "Try for authenticity that can go as far as finding Indian talent.
"We want to find a way to create characters that have a home in this world so we can bring Indian culture to the North American Marvel fan. Let them understand a different part of the world. I think that’s going to be an exciting thing for Marvel.
"My hope is that the fan in India feels just as much part of the Marvel universe as some kid in New York,” Wacker told the Indian Express newspaper.
Asked which Indian actor he would be keen to cast in such an eventuality, Wacker did not hesitate to name Shah Rukh Khan.
“If we make Indian content, we have to put Shah Rukh Khan. He has to be in it,” he said. “I can’t speak for the movies, but if we have stories set in different countries, the goal is always to use actors from that part of the world.”
Khan recently said he had never been offered a film role by Hollywood. If Marvel does come up with a relevant script, Khan’s fans will be more than keen to see him in it. Khan has played a superhero in his home production Ra.One (2011).
In the last Marvel film, Deadpool 2 (2018), actor Ranveer Singh was Deadpool's voice in the Hindi version.
