Cinephiles were finally able to get a glimpse of the much awaited 2.0, that brings together south star Rajinikanth and Hindi cinema's very own Akshay Kumar. The film's first teaser was released on 13 September. Directed by Shankar, 2.0 is the sequel to his own Robot aka Ethiran (2010). While the first film had Rajinikanth in the lead, Akshay joins him as the antagonist in the sequel.
As far as its VFX is concerned, the teaser promises something new to the Indian audience. The post-production took too long because of the special effects and the teaser gives a hint at the amount of VFX used in the film.
The scenes of mobile phones being sucked in the air from people’s hands across the world is not only stunning, but amusing as well. The moment when a man is surrounded by thousands of mobile phones is also interesting.
The tagline of the film — ‘The world is not only for humans’ — hints that 2.0 might also have a social message in its plot. The film, perhaps, speaks against the harm caused to the birds by mobile phone radiation and Akshay, as the giant bird representing the aerial specias and, ironically, made of cell phones, is out to create havoc. The Pad Man (2018) actor looks menacing but we don’t see much of him in the teaser. Rajinikanth appears in good form; both as the scientist and the robot.
The superhero films have a fairly predictable storyline that have the trope of good versus evil in its crux. But the new angle of using mobile phones as a tool gives hope that this mutli-starrer might have something novel in store.
Also starring British actress Amy Jackson, 2.0 is all set to be released on 29 November.
