Jalebi trailer: Rhea Chakraborty, Varun Mitra’s romantic drama sugarcoated with melodrama

India cinema has been built on romantic dramas. The worrying part today is that there are very few romantic stories that really strike a chord. Vishesh Films has given us hits like Aashiqui (1990), Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), Gangster (2006) and Aashiqui 2 (2013) in the past. The marquee production house is now serving us a Jalebi: The Everlasting Taste of Love, helmed by first-time director Pushpdeep Bhardwaj.

With a title like that, the film sounds appetising, but the trailer is anything but impressive.

Aisha (Rhea Chakraborty) is on a Delhi tour. She befriends and falls in love with Dev (Varun Mitra). The girl is head over heels in love, and ends up marrying Dev.

It turns out to be an impulsive decision and this relationship doesn't last long as the couple fails to solve their simmering differences. Dev is a simple Delhi boy who refuses to leave his palatial ancestral home to live with his ambitious wife Aisha. Separated by choice, but brought together again by destiny, the couple crosses paths. This time, Dev is with a different partner.

Penned by Kausar Munir and director Bhardwaj, the story seems relevant at times, as human relationships are challenged in the ever exploding materialistic world. Going by the trailer, Rhea Chakraborty and Varun Mitra don't show much enthusiasm as actors. Both come across as amateurs.

While arguing with each other, Dev tells Aisha, "You may find this talk melodramatic or whatever, but if I leave my family or this house, I can never be yours."

Mitra hits the nail on the head, as the Jalebi trailer seems to be sugarcoated with melodrama. The expressions and dialogue delivery by the lead pair is flat.

Over the years, intimate scenes have become an integral part of Vishesh Films. The poster that was released earlier suggested a generous sprinkling of those, but the trailer has only one.

The trailer is off the mark, and so it will be up to the music to build hype around the film. Director Bhardwaj has a host of lyric writers and music composers at his disposal.

If melodrama matches your taste buds, you may even enjoy this Jalebi trailer. The film will be released on 12 October.
