For his upcoming film, Sui Dhaaga: Made In India (2018), Varun Dhawan takes on the part of a simple tailor, a happy-go-lucky fellow named Mauji, from a small town in north India. The young actor plays someone quite unlike himself and it was important for him to create the right look for his character through his clothes.
In a behind-the-scenes video, Dhawan talked about how he worked with director Sharat Katariya to create Mauji. “It had to be a distinct look,” he said. So, for the first time in his career, the actor has sported long hair for his character.
Katariya also suggested that Dhawan grow a moustache for the part. They experimented with fake moustaches before Dhawan decided to grow one himself.
As a peon and later a tailor, Mauji can be seen wearing bell bottoms and double pleated pants. To complete the look as resident of north India, Dhawan wears half-sleeved sweaters over his shirt as Mauji.
The actor revealed that Mauji is a Mithun Chakraborty fan, so he tries to wear the same kind of boots that Chakraborty does. It were these little touches that brought his character to life.
Sui Dhaaga: Made In India (2018), also starring Anushka Sharma, is due to be released on 28 September 2018.
