Directed by Kartik Subbaraj, the film will also mark the Tamil debut of Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

While the preparations are ongoing for the trailer release of Rajinikanth's upcoming 2.0, the actor's new look from Kartik Subbaraj's upcoming Petta shows him in different light. With his handlebar moustache, and a traditional look, the actor is a far cry from the upgraded robot in Shankar's film.
Petta, which also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Simran and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, will mark the first collaboration between Rajinikanth and Kartik Subbaraj.

Dressed in a traditional white shirt, with the background of a temple town behind him, Rajinikanth's get-up is quite different from the urban cool one in the first look of the film. The handlebar moustache and the young look suggests the film might see the actor through different ages of his character.
While the working title of the film was said to be Thalaivar 165, a reference to the number of films Rajinikanth had done, it is now being called Petta. The cast and crew of the film have shot in various locations from Varanasi, and Lucknow among others.
Anirudh Ravichander is composing music for the film.
While the release date of the film has not yet been announced, Sun Pictures are likely to release the film in the summer of 2019.
