Widow of Silence trailer: Restrained look at the women left behind in Kashmir

The first trailer of the Urdu language film directed by Praveen Morchhale explores the harsh, lonely lives of the women who reside in Kashmir.

Writer-director Praveen Morchhale’s next Widow Of Silence makes its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival being held from 4 to 13 October. It competes in the 'A Window on Asian Cinema Section' of the South Korean festival.

The first trailer, with spartan yet breathtaking shorts of Kashmir by cinematographer Mohammad Reza Jahanpanah, reveals the women left behind — a wife, a mother and a daughter — when a Kashmiri man goes missing. There are teases of what the women have to endure without the man of the family.

Like the title suggests, the women suffer in silence. The daughter who is bullied at school, to the wife, played by Shilpi Marwaha, who cannot be called a widow as yet.

The Urdu language film promises to give a window into the lives of a community usually without a voice. After Morchhale’s last project, the Ladakhi language film, Walking With The Wind, there is no doubt that this too shall be just as compelling.
