Producer Sajid Nadiadwala has paid Rs35 lakh to the family of a worker who suffered fatal wounds in an accident on the sets of Housefull 4. Nadiadwala paid a further Rs1 lakh to the family through his trust.

Solai Karuppan, who had worked in the industry for 25 years, met with an accident on 22 August. He was hospitalised for over a month but succumbed to his wounds. He was admitted to LifeLine Hospital in Malad, Mumbai. Karuppan is survived by his wife and daughter Deepika.

Speaking about the accident, Federation of Western India Cine Employees treasurer Gangeshwar Shrivastav, told Cinestaan.com, “The accident happened few months ago while building the sets of Housefull 4 at Filmcity. The workers used a combustive chemical that was required for some moulding work. There was an explosion and two workers were severely injured. One worker recovered fully, but the other, Karuppan, sadly passed after over a month’s hospitalisation.”

Shrivastav pointed out the FWICE and the Allied Mazdoor Union ensured that the deceased got adequate compensation. “A total of Rs41 lakh has been given to his family as compensation. Nadiadwala paid around Rs36 lakh, while the Allied Mazdoor Union gave Rs5 lakh as compensation. Besides, we will look after his daughter’s education and her marriage,” added Shrivatsav.

Meanwhile, Karuppan's daughter Deepika has thanked Nadiadwala for his support. “My father worked in the film industry for almost 25 years. He was the only earning member of the family. It is a huge loss for us emotionally and even financially. We know of another family who went through a similar situation, but did not receive any financial help whereas for us, Sajid Nadiadwala sir has supported us financially and emotionally. We are very grateful to him for his contribution of Rs35 lakh towards our well-being for the future. He tried his best to save him by giving my father the best of doctors and timely treatment when required but unfortunately, he could not survive. He has also taken care of my father’s hospital bills worth Rs11 lakh,” Deepika said a statement issued through Nadiadwala's publicist.
