Actor Pankaj Tripathi is set to return to the ganglands as the imperious Kaleen Bhaiyya in the upcoming Amazon Prime series, Mirzapur. The trailer of the series captures the lust for power, violence and guns that fuels this enterprise in the town of Mirzapur.
The sketch of the trailer is simple but effectively establishes the many characters involved in this power struggle. Centrally placed is Kaleen Bhaiyya (Tripathi) whose power has instilled fear among the residents of the city. Divyendu Sharma plays his good-for-nothing son, who struggles to establish his own identty in the shadow of his father.
Vikrant Massey and Ali Fazal play two up and coming gun smugglers who aim for something big, and run into the wrong side of Kaleen Bhaiyya. While Massey is the quiet follower, it is Fazal's lust for violence that fuels the war.
The trailer is sharply cut, but suffers from a visible Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) hangover. The dialogues, like 'Guns for offence. Guns for defence. We will turn Mirzapur into America' has a good touch. The impact of the bloody scenes in the trailer cannot be understated.
The power of the series though lies in its casting which boasts of Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Massey, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Sharma, and Pankaj Tripathi.
The web-series is created by Karan Anshuman and Puneet Krishna. The nine-episode gangster drama will be directed by Gurmmeet Singh, Mihir Desai and Anshuman.
The series will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on 16 November.
