Was more interested in watching Kuch Kuch Hota Hai than dad's Bade Miyan Chote Miyan: Varun Dhawan

Karan Johar’s directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai instantly became a rage when it released 20 years ago on 16 October 1998. David Dhawan’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda in double roles, released on the same day and was also a success at the box office.

At the 20th anniversary celebration of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai yesterday (16 October), actor Varun Dhawan, son of David Dhawan, revealed that he was more interested in watching the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol-starrer than his own father's film.

“I was 11 years old when Kuch Kuch Hota Hai released. Ironically on the same day my dad’s film released called Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. I remember watching Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and I would keep asking [my dad], ‘Pa, when are we going to watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? When are we going to see Kuch Kuch Hota Hai?’ And he would say, ‘Lali, tell him to behave himself!’,” Varun recalled.

“I remember doing this at the premier of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan [while sitting] near Amit ji,” he said and turning towards Abhishek Bachchan, son of Amitabh Bachchan, he asked, “Were you there?” When Abhishek replied in the affirmative, Varun added much to everyone’s amusement, “Were you saying the same thing as well?” But Abhishek replied that he had already seen Kuch Kuch Hota Hai by then.

Varun also confessed that he likes Kuch Kuch Hota Hai more than Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. “Till date my dad also knows which film is my favourite. It is definitely Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It had a huge impact on me,” he added.  

Highlighting Johar’s importance in his life, he said, “At the cost of not ageing Karan and getting beaten up [by him], I think I have two father figures in my life. One is David Dhawan and one is Karan Johar. I am very grateful Karan that you made this film because this did change my life.”
