Director Ashutosh Gowariker’s ambitious war saga Panipat: The Great Betrayal went on the floors today. The film is based on the third battle of Panipat that took place in 1761 between the Marathas and Afghans, and was won by the latter.

The film stars stars Arjun Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Sanjay Dutt, who are essaying the characters of Sadashivrao Bhau, the king of Afghanistan Ahmed Shah Abdali and Parvatibai, respectively.

This is by far Kapoor’s biggest film in terms of scale and budget. He tweeted about the film going on floors saying, “Embarking on a journey like never before... with Ashu sir & our entire team. #Panipat #PanipatShootBeginsToday.”

Sanon willj oin the team later. She wrote, “Our #Panipat journey begins today. Super excited for this new chapter.. gonna join you guys in 2days.. lets do this! #PanipatShootBeginsToday.”

As per our trade sources, Panipat is made at a cost around Rs100 crore. This is an important project for the filmmaker as his last three films, What’s Your Raashee? (2009), Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se (2010) and Mohenjo Daro (2016) have been flops.

This is Gowariker’s first film with Kapoor, Sanon and Dutt. The three actors too haven’t worked with each other before.

Also starring Dalip Tahil, Panipat will be released on 6 December 2019.
