Box office: Hindi version of Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar’s 2.0 earns Rs20 crore on opening day

The film, directed by S Shankar, needs a good jump during the weekend.

Director S Shankar’s keenly awaited and long in the making 2.0, which is the sequel to his own Robot (2010), was finally released yesterday all over India. The film’s original language is Tamil but it has been dubbed in other languages too.

The Hindi version of the film, starring Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson, made Rs20 crore at the box office yesterday, as per figures shared by Boxofficeindia.com.

2.0 review: Rajinikanth reboots as the star of this fantastic, entertaining 3D universe

Although the number isn’t excellent, it is quite good considering it is a dubbed version and the fact that it was a working day yesterday. 2.0 had the eighth highest first day occupancy of the year at 40%. The list is led by Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Thugs Of Hindostan, which had 65%. Of course, the occupancy of the Aamir Khan-starrer dropped drastically after some severely negative word-of-mouth.

The same is not expected for 2.0 because the film’s reviews and reactions have been positive. The film might face a challenge today as it is a working day. 2.0 needs a massive jump in the weekend because its cost of production is enormously high at over Rs500 crore.

The producers have recovered some amount from the satellite deal. But it still needs to do well at the box office to benefit the exhibitors and distributors.
